Building your new home is exciting—but it can also feel overwhelming if you’re not sure what to expect. At Scott Alan Custom Projects, we believe the best experience starts with clarity. When you understand what happens—and when—you can enjoy the process with confidence.
Let’s walk through the typical 7-month home building timeline, from the moment we secure your lot to the day we reach lock-up.
1. The Planning Phase (Weeks 1–4)
Before we break ground, we lay the groundwork.
Lot Selection & Preparation: Whether you’ve already chosen a lot or need help finding one, this is where your location is confirmed.
Design & Floor Plan Finalization: We work closely with you to customize the layout, features, and finishes.
Permits & Paperwork: We submit all necessary building permits, order initial surveys, and align timelines.
This phase is critical for setting expectations and ensuring we’re aligned on vision, budget, and scope.
2. Excavation & Foundation (Weeks 5–6)
Once we have permits in hand, it’s go time.
Excavation Begins: We dig out the basement or slab area and prepare the site.
Footings & Foundation: Concrete footings are poured, followed by foundation walls and waterproofing.
Underground Services: Plumbing rough-ins and drainage systems are laid before the floor is sealed.
This stage gives your home its base—literally and structurally.
3. Framing (Weeks 7–10)
This is when your home starts to take shape.
Wall & Floor Framing: The skeleton of the house is built, and the layout becomes real.
Roof Framing & Sheathing: We construct and close in the roof.
Windows & Doors Installed: At this point, your home is "dried in" and weather-protected.
By the end of this phase, you’ll walk through the actual space and start to visualize your future home.
4. Lock-Up Stage (Weeks 11–12)
This is a key milestone—your home is now locked and secure.
Exterior Doors Locked: All main access points are installed and secure.
Mechanical Rough-Ins: Plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems are roughed in behind the walls.
First Inspections: City inspections take place to verify code compliance before closing up the walls.
From this point forward, we move from structural work to interior finishes.
5. Interior Work Begins (Weeks 13–22)
Now the magic happens inside.
Insulation & Drywall: Your home gets cozy and quiet with proper insulation, followed by drywall installation.
Flooring, Cabinets, & Trim: Kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces begin to come to life.
Painting & Lighting: Walls are painted, light fixtures are installed, and your interior design vision takes shape.
This stage is the longest but most visually satisfying as your home transforms from a shell into a sanctuary.
6. Final Details & Quality Checks (Weeks 23–28)
Final Fixtures & Hardware: Sinks, taps, door handles, and mirrors are installed.
Touch-Ups & Deficiency Walkthrough: We meticulously inspect every detail, from caulking to cabinet alignment.
Client Walkthrough & Orientation: You’ll walk through your home with us, ask questions, and receive your homeowner’s binder.
This is where our obsession with quality craftsmanship really shines.
7. Possession Day! (Week 29–30)
After about 7 months, it’s time to hand over the keys.
Final Clean: Your home is spotless and move-in ready.
Welcome Home: You get the keys and step into your new custom home—built with care, intention, and pride.
